Fourth Generation in Agriculture at the Same Location. | | A Journey to the 21st Century | | | At the turn of the last century two young Czechoslovakians, Paul Lukas and Mary Klimek made their separate ways to America in search of a new life in a free land. Mary arrived in 1899 and Paul in 1905. They met in Cleveland Ohio, and were married there in June of 1908.
Working and saving, they looked forward to the day when they could leave the crowded industrial city. In 1912 they realized their dreams and, with six other families, they traveled to Florida, settling in the rural and largely empty flatlands around Oviedo. Here, in what is now Seminole county, they farmed and raised their families. To retain their ties with their European heritage, they named the area Slavia, which in the Slovak language means "glory". This community of devout, practicing Christians at first held services in their homes. They later built a formal house of worship, St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
Following the death of Paul Lukas in 1939, one of his sons, Paul martin, carried on the family truck farm and at the same time looked after his younger brothers and sisters.

1970 - Paul Martin, Jr. realized that the days of a small truck farmer were numbered and he set about to find a way for the Lukas family to remain in agriculture.
Feb/1973 - The result of that search was Lukas Nursery & Garden Shop which opened in February of 1973 with 50 one-gallon cans of woody ornamental plants and a sales area under an old chicken house. With the encouragement of her son, Gertrude Greenleaf Lukas joined Paul Jr. in the nursery business that same year. Paul said it was most appropriate to have Greenleaf to help keep the leaves green. He proved to be a very capable manager and within three years had increased the nursery from 50 containers to 2 1/2 acres of container grown plants and propagation house.
1976 - Lukas Nursery incorporated in December. We salute our present employees and those who have gone before them. Without them what you see today would not have been possible. It is with hard work, sacrifice, and an unselfish desire to serve our fellow men that we continue to GROW GREEN plants and expand our agricultural services. We are thankful to God for blessing the labors of our hands and for guiding our lives. Green survival and the beautification of our environment -It's the concern of all of us!
